Biography

As the education reporter for KUAT Kimberly Craft takes direction from her conviction that students come first. “I want the people of Arizona to be accountable to their children, and not just pay lip service,” she says.

Craft arrived at KUAT in 1984, hired as a producer on Arizona Illustrated. She has left and returned three times since, with breaks in between to live in Portugal, produce television features at the City of Tucson’s Channel 12 and work on freelance projects. Craft joined KUAT Multimedia in 2003 and helped launch the UA Channel with its flagship program, UA Journal. Craft continues to host the monthly newsmagazine that features people and programs at the University of Arizona.

Craft received her B.A. in English from Stanford University in 1979 and moved to Tucson in 1980 where she became a reporter at KCUB radio. “Radio taught me to create an imaginary picture with words, and I continue to enjoy the medium.” Craft admits she receives the bulk of her information from radio and often contributes stories and features to KUAZ.

Craft received the Award of Excellence for Consistent and Accurate Reporting on Education in 2007 from the Arizona School Public Relations Association and numerous first and second place awards from the National Association of Telecommunications and Advisors.

Craft believes education must involve the community, and she has a role both on the job and off. Her two children are successful products of Tucson public schools and she established an endowed scholarship at the University of Arizona in memory of her late husband, Dr. Eric Monke.
