Biography

Luis Carrión is an award winning producer at Arizona Public Media, and contributes stories for television, radio, and on-line. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona Media Arts Program. His work often highlights the extraordinary stories that are present in our community but are sometimes hidden just beneath the surface of our daily lives. "I believe that many of the universal stories, the ones that have the power to move people of all persuasions, and cut across all segments of our society, can often be found among us in our daily struggles, accomplishments, failures, and passions," he says, "and I want to document these narratives in a way that is entertaining, enlightening, and aesthetically pleasing."

Luis has also served as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Media Arts at the University of Arizona, and worked on a variety of independent and commercial films. He has produced programs for Spanish language television, and has a personal and intuitive connection with the local community. "I have all sorts of interests," he says, "the outdoors, food, language, the border, art and music… and I'm always excited when I'm able to incorporate these topics into my work, and share them with our audiences."

Some of Luis' recent work has explored the immigrant experience several families through cuisine, documented the deadly plight of migrants as they travel through the Sonoran Desert, highlighted efforts by Native Americans to preserve traditional languages, profiled members of a roller derby league, and explored rock climbing in Southern Arizona. A common theme in much of Luis Carrión's work is the ongoing exploration of how cultures evolve, and how they hybridize and blend with one another to become something entirely different and unique.
