release Student films showing unique Native American viewpoints to be screened at Gallagher Theater May 1 Showcase of stories from local Native American perspectives to include film highlights and introductions from the student filmmakers

TUCSON, Ariz. (April 20, 2009) -- A special showcase of three student-made documentaries offering views of family, leadership and culture from a Native American perspective is scheduled for Friday, May 1 at the Gallagher Theater on the University of Arizona campus.

Highlights of “The Chiefs’ Prophecy,” “Changes from Within” and “Sons of Two Cultures” will be screened at the campus theater, along with introductions from the student producers themselves and insider notes about these special projects. The Native American student films are part of the Citizen Journalism project from Arizona Public Media, launched earlier this year in conjunction with the presentation of the American Experience: WE SHALL REMAIN documentary series.

The showcase will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, May 1 at the UA Gallagher Theater. The event is open to the public and seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Public parking is available at the Second Street Garage at Mountain Avenue on campus.

This special screening of highlights is presented by Arizona Public Media in partnership with the UA Native American Student Affairs Office (NASA) and the UA Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL).

American Experience: WE SHALL REMAIN – the groundbreaking documentary presenting early U.S. history through the Native American eyes – is broadcast Mondays at 9 p.m. on KUAT6 through May 11. It is presented in partnership with the Bert W. Martin Foundation and the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy. More information on the series -- including a format for viewers to post their own stories -- can be found on the WE SHALL REMAIN page of the Arizona Public Media website at http://tv.azpm.org/kuat/weshallremain/
