Seeking Water From the Sun: The Quest for Clean Water: A Solar Powered Solution - Where are We Now?

Save the Date! for a Special Presentation for Alumni, Faculty and Students, and the Public, Friday, November 8, 2013 at 3:30 p.m.

Tucson, Arizona – October 2, 2013 –University of Arizona alumni, faculty and students are invited to a free presentation and discussion, “Seeking Water From the Sun: The Quest for Clean Water: A Solar Powered Solution - Where are We Now?” on November 8, 2013 in the UA Student Memorial Center, Gallagher Theater at 3:30 p.m. This presentation and panel discussion will provide a snapshot on the design, construction, and current status of the solar-energy powered desalination prototype featured in the Arizona Public Media special documentary “Seeking Water From the Sun,” which aired on Earth Day, April 22, 2012. The documentary explores the scientific effort to resolve a dilemma of basic human need – clean water.

This event is free to all alumni, faculty, students, and the public, and is presented by the UA Institute of the Environment, Renewable Energy Network, the UA College of Engineering, the UA Water Sustainability Program, the UA Water Resources Research Center, the US Bureau of Reclamation, Arizona Public Media, and the UA Alumni Association’s Homecoming Collegiate and Campus Showcase.

AZPM’s “Seeking Water from the Sun” documentary looked at the drama of science and the reality of life on the Navajo Nation, as it explores the trials and tribulations faced by scientists designing and building a solar powered water distillation prototype, the first step of a plan to purify ground water for easier access to the Navajo people and their livestock.

The November 8th event will include a short presentation of a portion of the documentary along with panel discussion about what has developed with the solar distillation prototype since the film, and the national and global potential for the prototype. Ardeth Barnhart, program director for Renewable Energy, Institute of the Environment, will host the event which includes a panel discussion with the principal scientists involved in the project, the producers and directors of the film, and other special guests.

Seeking Water From the Sun” is a production of Arizona Public Media, produced by Dustinn Craig and Tom Kleespie in association with the UA Renewable Energy Network, UA College of Engineering, and Bureau of Reclamation, and input and cooperation from various Navajo Nation Chapters, community members, and agencies such as the Division of Water Resources, the Navajo Division of Natural Resources, and Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency. This documentary is narrated by Norman Patrick Brown with musical score by Mary Redhouse. This program was made possible in part by a Pacific Mountain Network Program Enhancement Grant supporting regional production that benefits and interests its member stations. Additional funding was provided by Desert Program Partners.
