Cochise County Boots Up Online Ed Program to Fill Gaps for All Students

Targeted kids include those in the Sierra Vista juvenile detention facility or small schools.

Cochise County's Board of Supervisors has approved an online program to improve education at a juvenile detention center and in small schools.

County School Superintendent Jacqui Clay said the online program, from Arizona-based Odysseyware, will reach out to all students, whether they go to home, private, charter or public schools.

"We are responsible for all of them. We want to make sure every single student, including our jail and detention students, get the same opportunities in education," Clay said.

Odysseyware has issued 50 software licenses as part of a one-year pilot agreement.

Clay says the new online learning program will serve as a form of blended learning.

"You’re taking the best out of online and face-to-face learning. It's both together," she said. "We are teaching the teachers how to use the best of both, where the kids can control their learning."

The web-based program will also give young people in detention a way to catch up on the school they’re missing.

The 50 licenses will be split between the juvenile detention facility in Sierra Vista, small schools, and students being homeschooled throughout Cochise County
