Dear Friends,

As the end of this calendar year approaches, AZPM is counting on you to help ensure that its mission to educate, inform, and inspire continues into the future. During this season of giving, I hope you will join my family and me in making a special year-end gift to help AZPM wrap the calendar year on solid financial footing and ensure that all Southern Arizonans continue to have access to quality television, radio, and digital programming and educational resources.

This month on PBS 6, don’t miss the encore presentation of season four of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL starting Sunday, December 15 at 8 p.m. with the first two episodes airing back-to-back. Look for episodes three and four at 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, and episodes five and six starting at 7 p.m. (note the earlier time) on Sunday, December 29. Also, now through December 23 seasons 1-4 of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL are available to stream free with the PBS App.

ARRIVAL ABBA Tribute band hero ARRIVAL FROM SWEDEN: THE MUSIC OF ABBA premieres Thursday, December 5 at at 8 p.m. on PBS 6.

Special programming continues through December 15 with brand-new music specials you will find only on PBS 6, including a salute to country music icon Willie Nelson on WILLIE NELSON’S 90th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION December 2 at 9:30 p.m., with a repeat performance Saturday, December 7 at 8:30 p.m. Also new this season are LEONARD COHEN – LIVE IN DUBLIN Sunday, December 8 at 11 p.m. and WHITNEY HOUSTON - THE CONCERT FOR A NEW SOUTH AFRICA December 9 at 10:30 p.m. ABBA tribute band ARRIVAL performs many of the Swedish superstars' greatest hits, from "Dancing Queen" and "Mamma Mia" to "Does Your Mother Know" and "The Winner Takes It All" in ARRIVAL FROM SWEDEN: THE MUSIC OF ABBA, premiering at 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, with an encore at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 8. Fans of the Swedish super-pop group will be able to pledge their support for tickets to ARRIVAL’s live performance with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra this coming March.

Mystery fans won’t want to miss the debut of LUCY WORSLEY’S HOLMES VS. DOYLE, in which the renowned British historian delves into the complex love-hate relationship between Sherlock Holmes, the “greatest detective who never lived,” and the man who created him, Arthur Conan Doyle. Episode One of this three-part series debuts on Sunday, December 8 at 7 p.m., followed by Episodes Two and Three on December 15 and December 22 respectively. On Sunday, December 8 at 8:30 p.m., VIENNA BLOOD: ANALYZING THE HIDDEN TRUTHS takes you behind the scenes of this thrilling murder mystery series set in dangerous and dazzling Vienna of the early twentieth century. Interviews with the creators and the cast explore the fascinating cases, characters, relationships, and political climate of the series.

JOY Tabernacle choir 2024 JOY: CHRISTMAS WITH THE TABERNACLE CHOIR premieres on Tuesday, December 17 at 8 p.m on PBS 6.

Holiday specials and premieres abound on PBS 6 throughout December. AMERICAN MASTERS presents the premiere of BRENDA LEE: ROCKIN’ AROUND at 10 p.m.Monday, December 16. JOY: CHRISTMAS WITH THE TABERNACLE CHOIR, premieres on Tuesday, December 17 at 8 p.m., followed by the electrifying TOO HOT TO HANDEL: THE GOSPEL MESSIAH at 9:30 p.m. with encore presentations on December 24.

Finally, don’t miss the beloved CALL THE MIDWIFE HOLIDAY SPECIAL at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 25, and bid farewell to 2024 with NEXT AT THE KENNEDY CENTER – SARA BAREILLES: NEW YEAR’S EVE WITH THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND FRIENDS starting at 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 31.

For deeper dives into relevant topics, don’t miss The Buzz on NPR 89.1 Fridays at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m., or available on demand. And because you asked for more news and public affairs coverage, AZPM has launched its newest original production, THE PRESS ROOM. This weekly roundtable program showcases the latest news stories and features a line-up of local, trusted, and experienced journalists, hosted by veteran journalist Steve Goldstein. What makes this program different is that it airs simultaneously on television, radio, and on azpm.org from NPR 89.1’s radio production studio. Special holiday music programming is featured on both Classical 90.5 and NPR 89.1. Classical 90.5 celebrates the first day of winter on December 22 with winter-themed music throughout the day. Locally produced concert specials airing on Christmas Eve include Arizona Repertory Singers at 1 p.m.; the annual Holiday Card to Tucson from the University of Arizona School of Music at 2 p.m.; the Phoenix Chorale at 5 p.m.; and the Arizona Holiday Program at 6 p.m. At 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve, join the College of St. Olaf as it celebrates its 150th anniversary with an extra-special holiday concert. Local Christmas Day concerts include the Arizona Repertory at 9 a.m., Holiday Card to Tucson at 10 a.m., the Phoenix Chorale at noon, and the Arizona Holiday Program at 1 p.m. Those of you who are up early on Christmas Day will find the perfect soundtrack to open gifts from the Canadian Brass at 6 a.m.; those of you who aren’t up that early can catch the concert on Christmas Eve at 4 p.m. Details are available on Classical 90.5’s radio program schedule.

NPR 89.1 gets into the holiday spirit with the late legendary comedian Jonathan Winters’ narration of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic A Christmas Carol at 6 p.m.December 24. Fans of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts won’t want to miss The Big Tiny Desk Holiday Special at 10 a.m. December 25, and NPR 89.1 helps to usher in the Jewish Festival of Lights with its Hanukkah special, Candles Burning Brightly, December 25 at 6 p.m.
