Dear Friends,
Arizona Public Media was honored recently with six Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). AZPM received the following awards:
- Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Arizona Illustrated: Two Spirit Powwow
- Excellence in Video for Arizona Illustrated: Wildlife and the Bighorn
- News Documentary for La Vaquita
- Feature Reporting for OSIRIS REx: Touch and Go
- Hard News for Arizona 360: Police program offers drug treatment instead of arrest
- Continued Coverage for Quitobaquito Protests
My congratulations and heartfelt thanks go to the talented and hard-working staff at AZPM for this recognition. And it can’t go without saying that these award-winning pieces would not have been possible without continued support from AZPM members and donors. Thank you!
Coming in June

As Southern Arizona experiences the coming of summer with Saguaro flowers blooming across the Sonoran Desert, an especially exciting episode of NATURE, “The Bat Man of Mexico,” traces the lesser long-nosed bats’ epic migration across Mexico. Narrated by David Attenborough, the episode explores the relationship between a species on the brink of extinction and the production of one of Mexico’s most famous exports - tequila. You may see some familiar landscapes!
In honor of Pride Month, AZPM is recognizing the stories of our LGBTQ community with special programming all throughout June. Tune in to PBS 6 for engaging stories like AMERICAN MASTERS Ballerina Boys, a look at Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (The Trocks), an all-male company that for 45 years has offered audiences their passion for ballet classics mixed with exuberant comedy; Prideland, a look at how LGBTQ Americans are finding ways to live authentically in the modern South; and more, all month long.
This month, you’ll also hear from AZPM staff, volunteers, donors, and members about why AZPM is so important to our community during the final fundraising campaign of the fiscal year. AZPM is counting on donors like you to ensure that funds are in place for the year ahead. I hope you will consider making a pledge of support or join me in making a special fiscal year-end additional gift to help us continue to bring you important storytelling, fact-based news, quality entertainment and so much more.
AZPM also offers you a deeper connection to the Southern Arizona Community. On Wednesday, June 2, we invite you to meet local artists from the Asian American community at the Global Arts Showcase, offered in partnership with the Pima County Public Library. Join us to explore traditional Asian music and dance with performances, artist interviews, and a LIVE Q&A. Save your spot for this virtual, family-friendly event by registering today.
Thank you for your continued support of AZPM.
Sincerely,
Jack Gibson
P.S. Did you know that individual support from members like you provides the single largest source of revenue for AZPM programming? Providing the best possible programming requires a continual investment of resources. I am grateful to you for your support, especially over the past year, and I hope we can continue to count on your ongoing support in Fiscal Year 2022.
