More than five years after the pandemic began, researchers say there’s still a lot to learn about COVID-19. And a team at the University of Arizona needs help from the public to collect more data about the virus.
Most people who get COVID-19 these days don’t go to the hospital, so there is no real record of their experiences with the virus, said Kristen Pogreba-Brown, associate professor of Epidemiology at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
Pogreba-Brown and a team of researchers have been running the Arizona CoVHORT COVID-19 Public Health Research Study since 2020. Their goal is to build up data about COVID-19 through an online public survey. The team is still seeking more Arizonans to answer questions about the virus.
“Whether you’ve never had COVID, you’ve had COVID 10 times, you are currently having long COVID — any and all people who want to participate are welcome to join the study,” Pogreba-Brown said. “We want to be as representative of the residents of Arizona as we possibly can be.”
Pogreba-Brown said one important thing her team hopes to better understand is long COVID, when people develop debilitating symptoms that drag on for months or years after their initial infection.
“People who are getting newly infected with COVID, even if it’s your second infection, third infection, we are still seeing people getting long COVID from that,” she said. “I think there’s a lot more people in the community suffering from long COVID than people realize.”
