The Arizona Department of Transportation will receive a $54 million federal grant for roadwork on Interstate 10 between Tucson and Casa Grande.
The money comes from the FASTLANE program, which is aimed at improving transportation that can bolster commerce around the US. It will add a lane in each direction to two four-mile stretches of I-10.
The state will also contribute $30 million to the project, which will include safety technology along the route.
“That section of I-10 is where we have a lot of the dust storms that come through, and we’re going to be looking at including some remote sensors along that area so we can help warn drivers about dust storms coming through there,” ADOT's Tom Herrmann said.
The added lane will mean the entire stretch of I-10 between Tucson and Casa Grande has at least three lanes of travel in each direction.
Herrmann said there is no time table for the start of construction.
