Residents in the Phoenix area can grow a surprising variety of species normally found in the tropics of Latin America, southeast Asia and other places due to the lower desert's milder winter temperatures compared to higher elevations like Tucson. For Randy McCabe, a large urban lot and irrigation water from Salt River Project have allowed him to transform his home with a growing number of species such as bananas, mangoes, plumerias, golden rain trees, and others.
